Internal medicine physicians, often referred to as internists, specialize in the comprehensive
care and management of adult patients across a wide spectrum of medical conditions. They
are trained to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses that affect adults, focusing on complex
medical problems and chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and
respiratory disorders. Internal medicine physicians utilize a combination of clinical expertise,
diagnostic skills, and evidence-based medicine to provide personalized care, as consultants
to other specialists when more specialized care is needed. They emphasize preventive care,
health promotion, and the holistic management of patients, integrating medical knowledge
with compassionate communication to address the physical, emotional, and social aspects
of health and illness.
An Internal Medicine Specialist in Australia has completed Advanced Training in the General
and Acute Care Medicine Program via Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of
Physicians (FRACP), which requires 3 years of full-time equivalent training, or an alternate
pathway if they have completed another Physician sub-specialty. This follows junior medical
training, which includes an internship, then at least one year as a Resident Medical Officer,
followed by at least 2 years as a Basic Physician Trainee, where they must pass both the
written and clinical exams before then can enter Advanced/sub-specialty training.
At Internal Medicine Australia (IMA) we aim to support and complement the work of General
Practitioners (GP) by taking on the more complicated patients that may require several GP
visits due to time constraints. For example, a diabetic might have obesity, undiagnosed
sleep apnoea, mild renal failure and poorly controlled hypertension. Hence, at IMA we are
best suited to patients with multiple complex issues rather than have them see multiple
specialists, which may not be easily accessible
